When power-power guru Matthew Sweet teamed up with the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs for a covers record in 2006, the pair tackled songs from the Sixties and Seventies — like the Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning” and Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.” The two returned this summer with a sequel, Under the Covers, Vol. 2, which boasts bright, bouncy takes on the Grateful Dead’s “Sugar Magnolia” and Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes.”

The pair popped by the RS studios recently to show off some of their work stripped down to just two acoustic guitars and vocals. Check out their rendition of Yes’ “I’ve Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People” from their latest album above, and Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” (from the first covers LP), after the jump.

MeFi Music
cortex was kind enough to let me borrow the lyrics from his song “The Bottom Falls Out of the Clouds” (which he wrote for the first ever MeFi Music Challenge), and allow me to set them to new folky/acoustic/lo-fi music for this month’s challenge. I really liked cortex’s lyrics a lot (as well as his music), and since autumn just began last week, they seemed very fitting. The song I’ve posted here is basically an “ideas recording” that I recorded very quickly in one weekday evening. It doesn’t use an exact version of the lyrics — meaning, I ended up repeating some lines, and I didn’t realize until after I’d recorded that I left out the repeat of the last line — hopefully that doesn’t disqualify the song from this month’s challenge… I didn’t have enough time to record the part for second guitar for “real” so this version has just three layers: guitar, vocals, and some harmony vocals.

In any case, I’m really glad to contribute something to MeFi Music, finally. This challenge in particular was a great way to get back in gear (no pun intended) and start record songs again, which I haven’t done in a really long time and had been missing. So thanks mediocre and flapjax at midnite. And thanks again to cortex for letting me borrow his lyrics!

A host of big-name artists are releasing albums this week, starting with Madonna’s double-disc collection dedicated to her entire tenure on Warner Music, Celebration. Packing 34 hits and two new songs onto two discs, Celebration is a dizzying, non-chronological journey through the Material Girl’s hits, from “Burning Up” to “Dress You Up” to “Hung Up.” “Her hitmaking genius is unmatched and — with the new Eurocheese blast ‘Celebration’ and the Lil Wayne duet ‘Revolver’ — undiminished,” Rob Sheffield writes in his four-star Rolling Stone review of the collection. “It’s almost enough to make you forget that they left off ‘Angel,’ which is just plain crazypants.” If by some chance you’re somehow unfamiliar with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s oeuvre, or you’re a child of the Britney era, Celebration is a perfect entry point.

Paramore’s third album Brand New Eyes also lands today. On their Rob Cavallo-produced LP, fiery-haired frontwoman Hayley Williams and the rest of Paramore deviate from their mall punk Riot! for something deeper, lambasting TV preachers, questioning the future and trying their hand at an acoustic ballad. When they hit, they nail it, however as Jon Dolan writes in his three-star review, “some of the sweeping moments blunt the band’s fresh-faced immediacy — as if the cute kids from the sticks have had a hard time turning pro.”

And then, there’s Mariah. After a handful of delays, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel finally arrives in a fiercely competitive sales week. Teaming with the all-star production duo of The-Dream and “Tricky” Stewart and revealing a humorous side usually hidden by the diva, “the result is Carey’s most sonically and tonally coherent release, a mix of love ballads (’Inseparable’) and sassy breakup anthems (’Standing O’) that might have been her best album had it been several songs shorter,” Jody Rosen writes in his three-and-a-half star review. Unfortunately, Memoirs’s second half isn’t quite the page-turner, thanks largely to her plodding cover of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

The influx of divas on the New Releases display not your thing? There’s also the Avett Brothers’ lush chamber folk major label debut I and Love and You, produced by Rick Rubin. For the dark and dramatic set, AFI’s Crash Love earned three stars from RS, while Alice in Chains’ Black Gives Way to Blue didn’t exactly have us excavating our flannel.

MeFi Music
Acoustic guitar song about the consequences of too much alcohol. It slowly slips away
As the evening starts to fade
All the things you say that I have done
The teardrops and the boasts
Shuffle off like ghosts
Can’t survive the cold light of the sun
When the morning comes
When the morning comes

What was that I said?
The words have left my head
Fired off from an old corroded gun
What was that you heard?
I think I heard the words
Ricochet through my heart, leaving none
When the morning comes
When the morning comes

Have to find a place where I can run
Faster than I ever thought I’d run
But I just can’t get away
There’s a price that I gotta pay
When the morning comes
When the morning comes
