“There’s more to be revealed and more to be told,” Scott Weiland has said about recording a new album with Stone Temple Pilots. “The story’s not finished.” Those quotes date back to April 2008, when STP first announced plans to reunite to tour and record new music. The band has managed to keep it together since that initial tour, but there’s been no sign of a new STP album. That is, until now. Weiland talked to Spinner recently about the prospects of the band’s first album since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da, and vowed that STP will get to work on the new LP once they’re off the road.

Scott Weiland backstage and up close: exclusive photos.

“When we finish the album, there will be a big tour around its release and that will probably be a long tour,” Weiland said. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in May that STP already had 18 songs written and that producer Don Was would be working on the LP. After that “long tour,” Weiland told Spinner he’d also get to work on his next solo album, the follow-up to 2008’s “Happy” in Galoshes.

The reunited band wrapped up their tour of the U.S. on October 25th and will next head to Canada for a trek that concludes November 24th in Nova Scotia. After that, two more shows are on the schedule, including a New Year’s Day show in Thackerville, Oklahoma, and then it’s studio time for Weiland and STP. Check out the band’s remaining tour dates:

Michael Jackson’s This Is It began its two-week theatrical run by grossing $2.2 million from its special advanced screenings alone, putting the doc on pace for the highest-grossing opening week for a concert film ever. The current record holder is Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which made $31 million its opening weekend in 2008, Variety reports. This Is It grossed an additional $2.2 million by midday Wednesday, and early foreign estimates predict the film is doing just as well overseas.

Look back at Jackson’s life and career, in photos.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Sony bought the hundreds of hours of footage and distribution rights of This Is It for $60 million from AEG Live, the concert promoter staging Jackson’s run of 50 concerts at London’s O2 Arena. Unlike most films that are in production for the better part of a year, This Is It only had a turnaround of three months from when the footage was purchased to when it was released, but by all accounts so far, including Elizabeth Taylor’s, This Is It is a success. The film’s soundtrack is also poised to top the charts next week.

Rolling Stone reported from an advance screening in New York that “This Is It is proof that Jackson did still have it: the magical voice, the gravity-defying moves (most of them), the clear-headed artistic vision of one of the greatest artists of our time.” Audiences were packed with fans paying tribute to Jackson — some came to the theater in bejeweled gloves, others did the “Thriller” dance in the theater lobby.

As a testament of Jackson’s worldwide appeal, when the film premiered in Los Angeles at 6 p.m. PST Tuesday, This Is It was unveiled simultaneously around the world, so many sold-out theaters in Europe were actually premiering the film at 2 a.m. or later.

John Mayer may not have set out to make a concept album, but as his fourth LP, Battle Studies, developed, he found the songs’ war theme oddly appealing. “I was loving the war theme, the battle theme. The militaristic, vulgar, violent side of a relationship on the down slope,” he tells Rolling Stone in an exclusive video interview. “The record starts out sort of like the sun is out, then it gets darker. And then the sun comes back out at the end.”

Earlier this month, Mayer unveiled the video for the album’s first single, “Who Says,” which gives fans a raw look at one of his nights out on the town. In our Fall Music Preview, Mayer told Rolling Stone the song’s first lyric, “Who says you can’t get stoned?” was not about weed but, being “in control of the pleasure in your life,” adding that the record — which also features a duet with Taylor Swift — as a whole is “the next step in the story of who I am.”

Fans will get to hear that step on November 17th when Battle Studies hits stores, and pre-orders start today. Mayer has also lined up a string of dates to introduce Battle Studies to the world: a gig in New York on the day the record arrives, as well as stops in Toronto and Australia before New Year’s Eve shows with RS Breaking Artist Mayer Hawthorne.

“If AC and DC had a baby, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother would be their rock & roll problem child,” Rob Sheffield writes in his four-star review of the Australian band’s second album Cosmic Egg. Since the band’s 2006 debut, two-thirds of the band have exited, leaving Stockdale and his new brood to completely embrace their love of Black Sabbath, making Cosmic Egg a wilder and freakier album than its predecessor. Among the highlights are “Sundial” and “In the Castle,” which Stockdale played acoustic during his recent visit to RS. Adds Sheffield, “There isn’t a boring moment — when’s the last time you could say that about an album with Cosmic in the title?”

Also this week: Tegan & Sara follow up the power-pop of 2007’s The Con with Sainthood. “Here, the girls just wanna have fun: With squawking synths, clipped vocals and head-snapping New Wave drums, their latest is an Eighties dance party,” writes Will Hermes in his three-and-a-half star review of the sisters’ new album. “Alligator” sounds like early Madonna, while “Redbelt” is inspired by the post-punk movement. “Tegan and Sara make catchy songs about loving not wisely but too well,” Hermes writes.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this week with a new reissue is U2’s The Unforgettable Fire. The disc includes remastered hits like “Pride (In the Name of Love)” and “Bad,” and the reissue’s bonus disc adds “fascinating experiments, including the excellent Bowie-drag outtake ‘Disappearing Act’ and some funky B sides that borrow from Eno’s Talking Heads playbook (see ‘Boomerang II’),” Will Hermes writes in Unforgettable Fire’s new four-and-a-half star review (which fans should find more agreeable than Kurt Loder’s original three-star review from 1984).

R.E.M. are also releasing their concert document Live at the Olympia, this week. Plus, there’s Devendra Banhart’s What Will We Be, Oscar-winning the Swell Season’s Strict Joy and the 5:5 Years of Hyperdub compilation.
