Here’s one for fans of the late, great Unsolved Mysteries (and the still-crankin’, not quite as great Ghost Hunters): A photograph taken in 1997 at the French cemetery where Doors frontman Jim Morrison is buried features a ghostly apparition that appears to be Morrison. Are you with us? We may lose you here: the photo has been deemed authentic, the U.K.’s Daily Express reports (via Spinner). The snapshot shows rock historian Brett Meisner standing next to Morrison’s grave at the Pere Lachaise cemetery, and in the background, there’s a white figure with its arms seemingly outstretched. Apparently, Morrison did break on through to the other side.

The Doors’ lasting legacy: photos.

The ghostly image went unnoticed by Meisner until 2002, when he spotted the strange blur and had the photo analyzed. In a book called Ghosts Caught on Film 2: Photographs of the Unexplained, researchers say the photo was in no way manipulated, and also rule out any possibility that it’s merely a trick of the light. The image itself is “unexplainable,” researchers said.

Meisner says now that he regrets going to the Pere Lachaise cemetery because he’s been plagued by eerie events ever since. Meisner tells the Daily Express that his marriage broke down and a close friend died of a drug overdose, and now he’s haunted by people who approach him to say that Morrison’s ghost is haunting them. “At first it was sort of interesting to see how many people felt a spiritual bond with Jim and the photo, but now the whole vibe seems negative,” Meisner said.

As anyone who read one of the many books on Morrison or saw Oliver Stone’s The Doors would tell you, Morrison believed he encountered the ghost of a Native American after witnessing a car accident in his youth in an incident that deeply impacted the singer. In fact, the lyrics to “Peace Frog” feature the lines, “Indians scattered on dawn’s highway bleeding, ghosts crowd the young child’s fragile eggshell mind,” which was Morrison’s account of the encounter. So it’s fitting that nearly three decades after his death, Morrison would appear as a specter in a photograph.

OK, OK, there’s absolutely no way to prove whether Morrison’s ghost is actually traipsing around his grave site, but we predict the Lizard King’s resting place is about to get a lot more visitors in the next few months.

Photo:Morigi/WireImage

Speculation as to why Lady Gaga and Kanye West’s “Fame Kills” tour was killed has begun, and TMZ has already shot out a few theories that start with sluggish early numbers. Ticket sales “sucked,” to point where ” ’sucked’ happens to be a nicer version of the word,” TMZ writes, adding Gaga’s and West’s people were allegedly “at each others throats like their last names were Gosselin” and that Gaga reportedly wanted to bring The Fame Monster and her steady rotation of outrageous outfits to smaller venues than the hockey arenas the tour planned on playing. The official word from Lady Gaga, though, is it was a “mutual decision,” Billboard reports. Gaga said West is going to take time off, and she’ll be embarking on a solo jaunt in several weeks.

See Lady Gaga’s wildest looks.

Considering Kanye’s “Glow in the Dark” tour was sold out and Gaga’s star is on the rise, it’s hard to believe ticket sales were that poor. However, in the case of the “Fame Kills” stop at New York’s Nassau Coliseum, plenty of general admission tickets were still available hours after they went on presale. In fact, Ticketmaster’s listing for the Nassau Coliseum show is still active, and GA tickets are widely available.

Of course, there’s a fairly obvious reason for slow ticket sales: the wave of anti-Kanye sentiment that washed across the country when West stole the spotlight from Taylor Swift at MTV’s Video Music Awards on September 13th. When Rolling Stone initially revealed the Fame Kills tour dates, the presale date listed on some of the concerts was just two days after the Swift incident.

Relive the 2009 VMAs in photos.

All the negative press surrounding Kanye delayed the presale date, and Live Nation information started to disappear from the Web as many questioned if the tour was off. Then came that strange, NSFW promo clip and assurances that Fame Kills wasn’t dead and ticket did go on sale.

Following the Swift debacle and its fallout, West went on The Jay Leno Show to apologize and say he wanted to take some time off, only to officially announce the “Fame Kills” tour days later. Whether West’s desire to take a hiatus played a role in snuffing the “Fame Kills” tour is unclear. Gaga was also reportedly disappointed in West following his display at the VMAs, but there’s no evidence at this point whether that put the brakes on “Fame Kills.” So far, West has not supplied any all-caps explanations over at his official blog.

According to Making the Band star Laurie Ann Gibson, who says she was doing Lady Gaga’s choreography for the tour, “Fame Kills” was canceled over “creative differences,” she wrote on her Twitter. Gibson also insinuates that Gaga still had a rehearsal yesterday, despite the tour’s cancellation, and that our Hot Diva might be planning her own trek. When word of the tour first broke, West had insisted the two would be collaborating onstage (“She’s talented and so incredible that she’s not an opening act. We’re doing it together, with no opening act”), so it’s possible the pair did run into problems as ideas developed. Gaga is still hard at work, though: earlier this week, she told Rolling Stone about the new tracks she was working up for the tour, and Dr. Dre hinted the two could be collaborating on a song soon.

While “creative differences” are being cited, our own comment section also blames the high price of tickets for the “Fame Kills” tour as a potential reason why the ticket sales “sucked.” After surcharges, tickets for general admission were about $150, and VIP tickets were $500.

A family spokesman told the Los Angeles Times yesterday that 11,000 tickets will be passed out for the free event and a press conference hosted by concert promoter AEG today confirmed how those tickets will be distributed.

Fans interested in attending the Jackson memorial can log on to StaplesCenter.com today through 6 p.m. PT Saturday. 17,500 tickets total will be made available: 11,000 for entrance to the Staples Center and 6,500 for neighboring Nokia Theatre, which will simulcast the memorial on three screens. 8,750 registered fans will be selected at random and receive two tickets apiece; they will receive a Ticketmaster code on Sunday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. that will allow them to pick up tickets and wristbands on Monday at an undisclosed location. No tickets will be physically distributed at the Staples Center or Nokia Theatre. “It was our wish to allow as many of Michael’s fans to be part of the memorial, and we wish to thank everyone for their support and understanding at this difficult time,” Jackson Family said in a statement.

(Look back at Michael Jackson’s life and career, in photos.)

Questions over who will foot the bill for the memorial and its associated costs — particularly police deployment — remain partially unanswered as of today. “There’s no precedent for this,” Councilwoman Jan Perry, who is stepping in as mayor for a vacationing Antonio Villaraigosa, told the L.A. Times. At the press conference today, Perry said the event had “the potential to impact public safety” and urged fans to watch the memorial on television; a pool feed will provide footage to all the major networks and a Webcast will also be available. All tickets to the event are free, and AEG’s Tim Lieweke discouraged scalping: “Those who would take advantage of this, shame on them.” At 11:30 a.m. PT today, the Staples Center site had received 500,000,000 hits, forcing an additional server to be added to handle the registration demand.

No details about the memorial service itself — who will perform or attend — have been released. Original plans to hold Jackson’s memorial and burial at Neverland Ranch were abandoned for legal and logistical reasons. Read more about the potential futures for Neverland here.

However, the family denied the claim, putting the King of Pop’s memorial plans in flux until now.

The Staples Center was the location of Jackson’s final This Is It! rehearsals before the show was scheduled to embark to London’s O2 Arena. According to the Los Angeles Times, authorities are already mapping out how law enforcement officials plan to deal with the possible Tuesday memorial. However, the Jackson family themselves have not yet confirmed the plans, and a Jackson spokesperson declined to comment. How fans could get one of the 20,000 tickets, or how much tickets would cost, was not answered in either report.

The problem with the Staples plan, as the LAT points out, is that it would be a massive financial undertaking for the cash-strapped city. The Los Angeles Lakers had their NBA Championship celebration scaled down from a planned parade to a party at the LA Coliseum, and even that cost $2 million, with the city footing half the bill. In the case of the Lakers, AEG Live, which owns the Staples Center and was staging the This Is It! concerts, helped with the final tab, but given that the company already fronted a large sum of money to prepare the This Is It! concerts and now have to refund $85 million in tickets, the company might be reluctant. Still, as Rock Daily reported yesterday, AEG CEO Randy Phillips said he’d offered the Jackson family to help with the memorial service and funeral.

Another possible roadblock is that the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus is set to take over the Staples Center starting on July 8th, the LAT reports, with the Parade of the Elephants from downtown LA to the Staples Center originally scheduled to take place the morning of Jackson’s memorial.
