Michael Jackson’s This Is It began its two-week theatrical run by grossing $2.2 million from its special advanced screenings alone, putting the doc on pace for the highest-grossing opening week for a concert film ever. The current record holder is Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which made $31 million its opening weekend in 2008, Variety reports. This Is It grossed an additional $2.2 million by midday Wednesday, and early foreign estimates predict the film is doing just as well overseas.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Sony bought the hundreds of hours of footage and distribution rights of This Is It for $60 million from AEG Live, the concert promoter staging Jackson’s run of 50 concerts at London’s O2 Arena. Unlike most films that are in production for the better part of a year, This Is It only had a turnaround of three months from when the footage was purchased to when it was released, but by all accounts so far, including Elizabeth Taylor’s, This Is It is a success. The film’s soundtrack is also poised to top the charts next week.

Rolling Stone reported from an advance screening in New York that “This Is It is proof that Jackson did still have it: the magical voice, the gravity-defying moves (most of them), the clear-headed artistic vision of one of the greatest artists of our time.” Audiences were packed with fans paying tribute to Jackson — some came to the theater in bejeweled gloves, others did the “Thriller” dance in the theater lobby.

As a testament of Jackson’s worldwide appeal, when the film premiered in Los Angeles at 6 p.m. PST Tuesday, This Is It was unveiled simultaneously around the world, so many sold-out theaters in Europe were actually premiering the film at 2 a.m. or later.

Despite canceling last night’s show in Kansas City, Missouri, due to the death of his assistant road manager/cousin, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will take the stage Thursday night at New York’s Madison Square Garden as part of the historic duo of concerts celebrating the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary.

Meet this year’s potential Hall of Fame inductees in classic photos.

On October 29th, Springsteen will share the spotlight with Tom Morello and John Fogerty. The bill also inclues Stevie Wonder with B.B King and John Legend, Simon & Garfunkel, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. The next day’s lineup boasts U2, Aretha Franklin (with Lenny Kravitz and Annie Lennox) and Metallica joined by Ozzy Osbourne. Plus, Jeff Beck will be stepping in for Eric Clapton, who had to cancel his set due to minor surgery.

Them Crooked Vultures have unveiled the studio version of “New Fang,” the first single off their self-titled debut album, over at twt.fm today. The supergroup — Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones — blend the heavy, jammy and psychedelic influences of their respective bands, and with Homme on lead vocals, “New Fang” sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Queens of the Stone Age album. The track opens with a few blissful seconds of Grohl’s monster drumming and launches into a groove propelled by Jones’ wandering bassline and a crunchy guitar riff that’s comparable to Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti rocker “The Wonton Song.”

The stream of “New Fang” is currently linking to an Amazon MP3 store page where fans can download the track for 99 cents, however Amazon says the song won’t be available for purchase until November 3rd. As Rolling Stone previously reported, the self-produced, 13-track Them Crooked Vultures will be released on November 17th, just three months and one week after the band made their surprise live debut in Chicago following this year’s Lollapalooza.

From there, the Vultures traveled Europe playing surprise gigs at festivals before finally flying back over the Atlantic for their first stateside tour, including gigs at Austin City Limits and New York’s Roseland Ballroom (read our review of the show here). In addition to concerts in the U.K., Germany and Australia on tap this year, the Vultures also announced some West Coast concerts, including the band’s first in California, in November. In five days, Michael Jackson fans will get their first real look at the comeback show that could have restored his reputation as the world’s greatest entertainer when the documentary This Is It hits 3,000 U.S. screens (and nearly 19,000 international theaters) for a two-week run. The film’s director, Kenny Ortega, says he had those fans in mind when he helped cut down 120 hours of rehearsal footage for Jackson’s 50-show run at London’s O2 Arena into the feature-length movie.

“There was this desire to have one more visit with Michael, one more experience with him,” says Ortega, who was choreographing Jackson’s show. “It’s powerful. It’s moving, it’s entertaining. It’s big.”

Two pieces of footage from This Is It screened for Rolling Stone were indeed impressive, and Jackson, who died after a lethal combination of sedatives stopped his heart on June 25th, appears professional and nimble on the screen. “Human Nature” begins with just Jackson and his guitarist, and it’s clear he’s totally in command of his body and his voice. “The Way You Make Me Feel” segues from a doo-wop intro into the song’s more familiar arrangement when Jackson punches out a fist and emits a little growl. When the band misses its cue, he firmly instructs, “Watch me for that growl!”

Gauntly thin and in bedazzled costumery, he hits all the notes, nails all the dance moves. He pops, locks, spins, does the worm, breaks out a penguin dance and even shows off some new moves. The dancers and musicians all working around him seem awestruck (their most frequent comments are “I agree, MJ” and “sounds good, MJ”). “We had a blueprint given to us by Michael from doing the tour — we translated his wishes and his final curtain call and that’s what you’ll see,” says the tour’s musical director, Michael Bearden.

The film also shows the sheer size of Jackson’s reimagined stage show — a huge set that included stories of scaffolding, the world’s largest 3-D LCD screen, a retinue of dancers, aerial acrobatics, a children’s choir and 12 original short films.

“I would hope they get what I got from it, which is a wonderful last experience with Michael that is like no other,” Ortega says.
