The Big News: Country duo Sugarland’s Live on the Inside set a new sales record on its way to the Number One spot on the Top 200, but it was a dubious honor. Live on the Inside sold 75,000 copies in its first week, making it the lowest-selling debut album ever to rule the charts. The previous low was set earlier this year when Chrisette Michele’s Epiphany moved 83,000 copies in May. Live on the Inside — a Walmart exclusive that features a CD of cover versions of songs R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon and more plus a DVD of live performances — is the duo’s second consecutive Number One album, following 2008’s Love on the Inside.

By comparison, Love sold 314,000 copies in its debut week last year to finish Number Two behind Miley Cyrus, then claimed Number One the following week with 162,000 copies. On the Michael Jackson front, the King of Pop once again topped the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Charts as Number Ones sold another 98,000 copies. However, this week marked the first time since Jackson’s death on June 25th that an album in the singer’s catalog failed to sell more than 100,000 copies.

Debuts: Two more albums managed to crack the Top 10: Gloriana’s self-titled album took Number Three with 44,000 copies, while the Kidz Bop 16 compilation grabbed Number 10 with 38,000 units sold. Other debuts of note include Modest Mouse’s new EP No One’s First and You’re Next (which features “King Rat”, for which Heath Ledger directed an animated video) at Number 15, the side project of Interpol’s Paul Banks, Julian Plenti is… Skyscraper at 103 and Amanda Blank’s debut I Love You at 109.

Last Week’s Heroes: Fabolous’ tenure atop the charts was very short-lived as Loso’s Way was almost bounced from the Top 10 in its second week, eventually settling at Nine with 36,000 copies sold, a drop of 63 percent from its debut week. Two weeks after topping the charts, Demi Lovato’s Here We Go Again found itself on the outskirts of the Top 10, falling from Eight to 14. Lovato’s fellow Disney posse member Miley Cyrus was also bumped from the Top 10 as the Hannah Montana 3 soundtrack fell from Seven to 11.

LSD turns hot dogs into talking troll dolls? Who wouldn’t want that? Followup to this. Back in 2007 I posted this, and mentioned another one I’d done based on another video on the same DVD. Here it is, and it actually predates the other one, although I don’t have an exact date. Added bonus: I went looking for an online copy of the video, and found it as #6 in this collection of fifteen terrible anti-crime PSAs. [previously: the nine weirdest PSAs ever made]

Photo: Buchanan/Getty

Two members of Panic at the Disco — or half the band — are leaving the group. Creative differences have forced the exit of lead guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker, the group announced on their MySpace blog today. Singer Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith will continue to operate as Panic at the Disco, while Ross and Walker — who was only bassist for Pretty. Odd. as original bassist Brent Walker was let go in 2006 — will start their own project.

“Ryan Ross and Jon Walker will be leaving Panic at the Disco to embark on a musical excursion of their own. Though the four of us have made music together in the past, we’ve creatively evolved in different directions which has compromised what each of us want to personally achieve,” the band wrote on their MySpace page. “Over the years, we have remained close and honest with each other, which helped us to realize that our goals were different and that parting ways is truly what is best for each of us. We are all excited for the future, you should be too.”

Over at the Panic at the Disco MySpace page, fans aren’t taking the news well at all. “This is the worst news, ever right now. I still can’t believe it. ?I think I’m in a stage, where I’m refusing to believe it,” bemoans one fan, while another fan remarks that the half the band leaving PATD might be a sign of the apocalypse, saying “The world is going to end now. Fuck it. DONT LEAVE JON AND RYAN!”

The departures come at a pretty odd time for the band. The group was reportedly in the final stages of completing their third album and first single “New Perspective” was expected to hit radio August 18th, Absolute Punk reports. In fact, Pete Wentz Tweeted today that he was going to listen to four new Panic tracks. The band was also tagged to open up some Blink-182 and No Doubt shows this August. “All touring and album plans for Panic will continue as previously announced,” PATD wrote in concluding their MySpace post.

Poison frontman Bret Michaels was forced to reschedule a pair of solo gigs citing “injuries suffered at the Tony Awards June 7,” but according to Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott, Michaels is still on for the June 23rd launch of Def Lep’s summer tour with Poison and Cheap Trick. “I bet he’s had worse in bars,” he tells Rolling Stone. “We all have, really, at some point in our career. Some irate boyfriend that thinks you looked a bit too hard at the girl in the third row.”

Def Leppard are heading into the tour fresh from their buzz-generating performance with Taylor Swift at last week’s 2009 CMT Music Awards, and Elliott says the band has assembled some career-spanning sets, to keep things fresh for those who’ve seen the group in concert in recent years.

“We’ve got 90 minutes to try and keep every Leppard fan out there happy, because they’ll all get, ‘Oh, they should’ve played this, and they should’ve played that,’ ” he says. “I think if we played all night, there’d be someone saying, ‘Well, they didn’t play that B side from 1983,’ or whatever. What we’ve done is, we’ve got a tour set that’s going to change. We’ve got certain songs we’re going to flip out every night, but I doubt very much we’ll play the same set two nights in a row.”

Of course, the band has to insert certain songs from their repertoire (”Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Rock of Ages,” “Love Bites”) into every set, “or we wouldn’t get out of the building alive. If I were to see the Stones, and I didn’t hear ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’ I’m going to go home disappointed,” Elliott says. Not once, though, did the band consider following in Aerosmith’s footsteps; Steven Tyler and Co. will be playing two of their albums, 1975’s Toys in the Attic and 1976’s Rocks, from front to back on their summer tour with ZZ Top.

“There might be a time in the not-so-distant future where we do something similar to what Sparks did last year,” Elliott explains; the American rockers played a 21-night stint in London, playing each of their albums in chronological order over 21 days. “We’ve thought about making it into a spectacle, at some stage in our careers, where we just do every album we’ve ever done… 12 albums over 12 days, in a theater somewhere,” Elliott reveals. “It would be fantastic to be able to film it, and put it out as a DVD, where you could buy them as individuals or you could get them like a set of encyclopedias, if you like.”

This summer’s tour follows the formula Def Lep’s been using the past five years: Team up with other mega-acts from the 1980s (like Bryan Adams, Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon), hit the road, and rock America’s arenas, one after the other.

“I think us, Poison, and Cheap Trick is pretty much an event,” Elliott says. “Up until 2005, we were really struggling to find opening acts that wanted to tour with Def Leppard,” he admits. “It was sort of that post-grunge hangover or whatever, and all of a sudden, the Journeys and the Foreigners and people were banging on our door. We’ve had a real mixture of ’70s and ’80s bands out with us. There are no ’90s bands around, other than Pearl Jam, and they don’t need to tour with us. So, where are you going to go? Everybody was telling us that teaming up with other bands from the ’80s was going to put bums in seats, as they say, and we’ve been embracing this for five straight summers now. It’s been fantastic, and I think this year’s going to be up there with any that we’ve done so far.”
