To record the follow-up to 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, Maroon 5 escaped the excesses of Los Angeles and decamped to the Switzerland studio of Robert “Mutt” Lange, who is producing band’s 2010 album. “It’s truly incredible, and it’s so different because we’ve had only work to focus on,” frontman Adam Levine tells Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone checked in with Levine this summer, when he assured fans that while the album hadn’t “necessarily taken shape yet,” it would unmistakably sound like a Maroon 5 record. “It’s what it is,” Levine told RS. “It’s us, just newer, better, fitter, happier, stronger. It’s going to be good.”

Maroon 5 will return from the land of neutrality, chocolate and cuckoo clocks in the coming weeks to embark on a tour of college campuses throughout the States. Will Maroon 5 use the trek to road test some new material? We’ll find out November 2nd in Murray, Kentucky. Until then, check out the tour dates below:

Chris Brown listed fresh live dates in a post on his official Website on October 16th, and today his label confirmed the singer’s Fan Appreciation Tour — a 19-date trek that takes the “Forever” singer to intimate venues and clubs “conceptualized for and with ‘fans only’ in mind,” according to a press release. The tour will kick off November 14th in Houston and wrap a month later on December 15th with a show at New York’s Nokia Theater.

Proceeds from the tour will benefit a handful of charities, including Best Buddies International, an organization that works with children with intellectual disabilities, and Los Angeles’ Jenesse Center, a domestic violence intervention organization. Brown will also visit the Best Buddies International programs while on the road.

Brown was sentenced to probation, counseling and community labor for assaulting Rihanna earlier this year, and a judge must grant him permission to travel outside of Virginia. Perhaps not coincidentally, Brown’s announcement comes the same day Rihanna made headlines for releasing her first musical statement since the assault, the new single “Russian Roulette,” on her Website this morning.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Brown will make his official advertised return to the stage for the first time since the February 8th incident next Tuesday, October 27th at the Powerhouse concert at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium.

Here’s one for fans of the late, great Unsolved Mysteries (and the still-crankin’, not quite as great Ghost Hunters): A photograph taken in 1997 at the French cemetery where Doors frontman Jim Morrison is buried features a ghostly apparition that appears to be Morrison. Are you with us? We may lose you here: the photo has been deemed authentic, the U.K.’s Daily Express reports (via Spinner). The snapshot shows rock historian Brett Meisner standing next to Morrison’s grave at the Pere Lachaise cemetery, and in the background, there’s a white figure with its arms seemingly outstretched. Apparently, Morrison did break on through to the other side.

The Doors’ lasting legacy: photos.

The ghostly image went unnoticed by Meisner until 2002, when he spotted the strange blur and had the photo analyzed. In a book called Ghosts Caught on Film 2: Photographs of the Unexplained, researchers say the photo was in no way manipulated, and also rule out any possibility that it’s merely a trick of the light. The image itself is “unexplainable,” researchers said.

Meisner says now that he regrets going to the Pere Lachaise cemetery because he’s been plagued by eerie events ever since. Meisner tells the Daily Express that his marriage broke down and a close friend died of a drug overdose, and now he’s haunted by people who approach him to say that Morrison’s ghost is haunting them. “At first it was sort of interesting to see how many people felt a spiritual bond with Jim and the photo, but now the whole vibe seems negative,” Meisner said.

As anyone who read one of the many books on Morrison or saw Oliver Stone’s The Doors would tell you, Morrison believed he encountered the ghost of a Native American after witnessing a car accident in his youth in an incident that deeply impacted the singer. In fact, the lyrics to “Peace Frog” feature the lines, “Indians scattered on dawn’s highway bleeding, ghosts crowd the young child’s fragile eggshell mind,” which was Morrison’s account of the encounter. So it’s fitting that nearly three decades after his death, Morrison would appear as a specter in a photograph.

OK, OK, there’s absolutely no way to prove whether Morrison’s ghost is actually traipsing around his grave site, but we predict the Lizard King’s resting place is about to get a lot more visitors in the next few months.

Yesterday news broke that Carly Simon filed a lawsuit against Starbucks claiming the coffee giant failed to market her last album, This Kind of Love, properly. Today Starbucks’ vice president of brand content Chris Bruzzo responded to Simon’s legal action, telling Rolling Stone that the company went out of its way to cater to Simon’s requests.

“We offered Carly Simon CDs in every store that we offered Paul McCartney CDs,” Bruzzo tells RS, citing the most noteworthy Hear Music exclusive, Memory Almost Full. “We put This Kind of Love into every store that sells music, which is almost every one of our stores. We’re talking about more than 7,000 stores had a supply of Carly Simon CD at launch.”

Most CDs stay on Starbucks shelves for four weeks, but even with sales slumping, Bruzzo says the company agreed to keep This Kind of Love stocked for six weeks, plus an additional six weeks in markets where Simon’s management felt the singer had a greater audience. “Her team said, ‘You know, she’s got a really strong fan base in the Northeast, and in fact, she’s also touring there… We’d love for you guys to extend it in New York and Boston,’ ” Bruzzo says. “Now this was above and beyond anything that we had committed or were required to do, but we decided to do it anyway,” adding that stores in those markets stocked This Kind of Love until September, well after its release on April 29th, 2008.

Simon told the New York Times she blames Starbucks for the album’s disappointing sales, but Bruzzo insists Nielsen SoundScan numbers prove that Starbucks actually helped move copies of This Kind of Love, an album that wasn’t exclusive to Starbucks. By the first week of June, Starbucks had sold between 37,000 to 40,000 copies of This Kind of Love, Bruzzo says, which represents 40 to 45 percent of all the copies This Kind of Love sold at that point. For most non-exclusives sold at Starbucks, the coffee chain usually accounts for about 20 to 25 percent of the total albums sold.

Simon also argues her album was mismanaged because five days prior to its release, the company announced it was “refining their music strategy” and transferring control of Hear Music over to Concord Music Group. “That had zero impact [on the disappointing sales],” Bruzzo responds. “Imagine all the effort that they go through to getting CDs out to stores, and the market time, and the PR plans that go into launching something like that. Most of that work was not done in the last couple of days. There was months of work that led up to that and everything from carrying it in our stores.” A full-page ad in the New York Times and numerous PR events were also set up by Starbucks to promote the release, Bruzzo adds.

“We’re very disappointed that Carly has decided to file this suit because we worked very hard and put a lot of time, and energy, and effort from the music team and thousands of stores behind giving this album its best shot in finding its audience,” Bruzzo says. “In fact, we went to kind of extraordinary lengths to work with Carly and her management to make this album do as well as we had hoped it would do.” Starbucks also released a statement that reads, “We would have preferred to work this out with Ms. Simon, but it appears we are headed for litigation.”
