“The Who: Rock Band” On the Way? Daltrey Drops a Hint

The Who will reportedly be the next band to receive their own branded Rock Band video game. Singer Roger Daltrey let the following tidbit slip in an interview with MassLive: “The game, yeah, yeah, they’re going to be doing a Who one next year. There is one planned. [The idea] is fabulous. Anything that gets non-musical people interested in music is wonderful.” So far, only the Beatles have their own Rock Band title; Guitar Hero has games pegged to acts including Aerosmith and Metallica.

A Rock Band spokeperson told video game blog Kotaku, “We’re working closely with the Who on what’s next, but don’t have anything new to announce at this time.”

Given the cinematic and conceptual nature of the Who and Pete Townshend, Rock Band seems like a better fit for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band than Guitar Hero. Whereas GH has created lifelike avatars and restored famed venues for their artist-based games like GH: Metallica or GH: Van Halen, MTV Games upped the ante with The Beatles: Rock Band, crafting entire dreamscapes to accompany the music and offering replicas of the Fab Four’s instruments, an approach that would work well with the Who’s concept albums like Tommy and Quadrophenia.

Unlike the Beatles, however, the Who have already offered up a number of their songs for preexisting Rock Band games: RB featured “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” RB2 had “Pinball Wizard” and July 2008 saw the The Best of the Who bring a dozen of the band’s hits to Rock Band as downloadable content.

“The Beatles: Rock Band” Beats “Guitar Hero 5? in September Sales

As album sales soften and the industry turns to alternate ways to get music to fans, the battle between the big music video games has become increasingly heated, and new sales figures indicate The Beatles: Rock Band has a bit of an edge on Guitar Hero 5. According to Billboard, The Beatles: Rock Band sold 595,000 copies following its September 9th release, while GH5 moved 499,000 units since it hit stores on September 1st. In all, both games help fuel a revenue increase of 72 percent for music video games compared to September 2008.

Guitar Hero 5 kept pace with the opening month sales of its predecessor Guitar Hero: World Tour, which sold 534,000 copies last year, Billboard reports. However, the Beatles helped push MTV Games to new highs, as TB:RB more than doubled the 238,000 units of Rock Band 2 that were purchased in its first month. The Beatles: Rock Band, which was only outsold by Halo 3 and Madden ‘10 last month, came in second in overall revenue due to its higher price tag and all the add-on replica instruments that were available either separately or as a deluxe package.

As Rolling Stone reported yesterday, The Beatles: Rock Band is set to get a bump starting today when the remaining tracks from Abbey Road become available for download. Additionally, next month the rest of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band will become available, followed by Rubber Soul in December. LEGO Rock Band, DJ Hero, Band Hero and Guitar Hero: Van Halen should also help boost revenues as all due by year’s end.

The uproar over Kurt Cobain’s Guitar Hero 5 avatar doing some uncharacteristic things (like, oh, singing Bon Jovi), took over the Web last month, and in the past few weeks playable characters for Iggy Pop and David Bowie (from LEGO Rock Band) have emerged.

Is Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” Bound for “SNL”? New Track Hits the Web

Bummed out that the “Fame Kills” tour was canceled? This new song by Lady Gaga should help soften the blow. “Bad Romance” is rumored to be among the new songs on Gaga’s Fame Monster reissue out November 24th, and the front-running candidate to be that new song the Hot Diva has promised to perform when she serves as musical guest on tomorrow night’s Saturday Night Live. (Thanks to ONTD for the clip above.) Gaga acknowledged the tune with a tweet today that reads, “Leaked next single is makin my ears bleed. Wait till you hear the real version ”

“Bad Romance” was produced by RedOne, who also is credited on Gaga’s previous singles “Just Dance,” “LoveGame” and “Poker Face” (and is doing work on Adam Lambert’s anticipated debut). This new single doesn’t deviate far from the blueprint mapped out by those other hits, especially “Poker Face,” to which “Bad Romance” bears a striking resemblance. Lyrically, the track has Gaga exploring the joys of a bad romance, while the misplaced bridge takes a detour to talk about fashion.

“I think re-releases are unfair,” Gaga told Rolling Stone at her Heartbeats earbuds conference with Dr. Dre. “It’s artists sneaking singles onto an already finished piece of work in an effort to keep the album afloat. Originally [my label] only wanted me to put out three songs and now it’s much more than that. It’s a new album’s worth of material.” Dr. Dre also hinted at a possible collaboration with Gaga in the future.

As Rolling Stone reported, Gaga’s “Fame Kills” tour with Kanye West was canceled for reasons ranging from “creative differences” to poor ticket sales. Regardless, the setback seems to be a mere speed bump for Gaga, who is reportedly already planning to her launch her own tour in a few weeks.

Blanco honors the King of Pop by completely reinventing him, working pinprick vocal samples into his jumpy, chaotic production. The accompanying video could almost function as a high-tech teaser for This is It!.

Phoenix, “Playground Love” [Air Cover]
Oui Oui: Frenchmen Phoenix tip a beret to their pop predecessors, turning out this cool and stately version of Air’s equally cool and stately “Playground Love.” Afterwards, the two bands shared baguettes and raved about Gerard Depardieu.

FM Belfast, “Lotus (Killing in the Name of)” [Rage Against the Machine Cover]
We’d kind of like to know what Rage thinks about this, so Tom Morello, if you’re reading, you know where to find us. As for us, we think this chilly reinvention of Rage’s classic protest anthem works just fine, even if its retro-chic synths make it sound like Lóa Hlín Hjálmtýsdóttir is protesting the villains in an old Activision game.

La Roux vs. the Knife, “Silent Bullet” [Mash-up]
There is also a mash-up of the Knife and “Paper Planes” on this page but, as good as that song is, can we all agree to be done with it for a little while? The Knife/La Roux cross-breed is better anyway, strangely soulful and icy at the same time. It’s like trying to get it on inside of a walk-in refrigerator.
