“The Who: Rock Band” On the Way? Daltrey Drops a Hint

The Who will reportedly be the next band to receive their own branded Rock Band video game. Singer Roger Daltrey let the following tidbit slip in an interview with MassLive: “The game, yeah, yeah, they’re going to be doing a Who one next year. There is one planned. [The idea] is fabulous. Anything that gets non-musical people interested in music is wonderful.” So far, only the Beatles have their own Rock Band title; Guitar Hero has games pegged to acts including Aerosmith and Metallica.

A Rock Band spokeperson told video game blog Kotaku, “We’re working closely with the Who on what’s next, but don’t have anything new to announce at this time.”

Given the cinematic and conceptual nature of the Who and Pete Townshend, Rock Band seems like a better fit for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band than Guitar Hero. Whereas GH has created lifelike avatars and restored famed venues for their artist-based games like GH: Metallica or GH: Van Halen, MTV Games upped the ante with The Beatles: Rock Band, crafting entire dreamscapes to accompany the music and offering replicas of the Fab Four’s instruments, an approach that would work well with the Who’s concept albums like Tommy and Quadrophenia.

Unlike the Beatles, however, the Who have already offered up a number of their songs for preexisting Rock Band games: RB featured “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” RB2 had “Pinball Wizard” and July 2008 saw the The Best of the Who bring a dozen of the band’s hits to Rock Band as downloadable content.

Louie and the Lovers didn’t come from out of nowhere; it just seemed that way. A band of Mexican-Americans from Salinas, California, singer-guitarist-songwriter Louie Ortega, singer-guitarist Frank Paredes, bassist Steve Vargas and drummer Albert Parra quietly issued one of 1970’s best non-hit singles — “I Know You Know,” a bolt of spangled jangle and smooth garage-soul harmonies that Greil Marcus called, in these pages, “perfect music to wake up to” — and then one of rock’s great overlooked debuts, Rise, produced by Doug Sahm.

The golden-dawn chorus of the title song, the fuzz and funk of “Sittin’ by Your River” and the dusty doo-wop waltz “Driver Go Slow” now sound like a natural bridge from Creedence Clearwater Revival to the Chicano-rock explorations of Los Lobos. The Complete Recordings (Bear Family) reissues that prophetic roots ‘n’ spice with two LPs worth of mostly unreleased 1971-73 material, all rolling with the same class and natural groove.

serendipitous collaboration on a (haunting) song.

Was playing with all the cool things at the local music store.. just jamming away on gear that costs WAY too much for any human musician to actually buy (come on i know SOMEONE out there does the same sometimes… uses the amazing gear, for hours on end… and buys some strings… any music shop owners… i know, it’s ok if you hate me already
anyway, this guy comes up and asks if I would be able to join him and his producer to record something with him…

long story not told, it was an amazing time, played till 9 the next morning recording stuff, drove to class an hour away, and never have seen them again… This man was amazing… both philosophically, and his musical skills.
So this is a song never rehearsed, but it was a little rhythm that I had in my head, started playing, and he just walks up to the mic… and does this.

A beepy bloop guitar song. Some people like this sort of sound. I know I do.

Obviously, it’s much easier to write music using a program that will play each part for you, instead of recording everything with real people using real instruments.

I have a feeling more people would like it if it were done the “real” way. Oh well.
