Blanco honors the King of Pop by completely reinventing him, working pinprick vocal samples into his jumpy, chaotic production. The accompanying video could almost function as a high-tech teaser for This is It!.

Phoenix, “Playground Love” [Air Cover]
Oui Oui: Frenchmen Phoenix tip a beret to their pop predecessors, turning out this cool and stately version of Air’s equally cool and stately “Playground Love.” Afterwards, the two bands shared baguettes and raved about Gerard Depardieu.

FM Belfast, “Lotus (Killing in the Name of)” [Rage Against the Machine Cover]
We’d kind of like to know what Rage thinks about this, so Tom Morello, if you’re reading, you know where to find us. As for us, we think this chilly reinvention of Rage’s classic protest anthem works just fine, even if its retro-chic synths make it sound like Lóa Hlín Hjálmtýsdóttir is protesting the villains in an old Activision game.

La Roux vs. the Knife, “Silent Bullet” [Mash-up]
There is also a mash-up of the Knife and “Paper Planes” on this page but, as good as that song is, can we all agree to be done with it for a little while? The Knife/La Roux cross-breed is better anyway, strangely soulful and icy at the same time. It’s like trying to get it on inside of a walk-in refrigerator.

Dirty Projectors, “When the World Comes to an End” [New Song Live]
So, you’re the Dirty Projectors, an indie band that a good number of people have heard of, but are by no means a household name. You’re performing on a national television program, ostensibly to promote your newest record. And so what do you do? You play a brand new song that’s not on the record. After they were done, Fallon interviewed Jude Law about a movie he hasn’t made yet, about a panda that can see the future.

First Listen: Dead Man’s Bones’ “In The Room Where You Sleep”

With their psychedelic flourishes, suffocated vocals and lyrics featuring love stores about werewolves, ghosts and other creatures of the night, Dead Man’s Bones sound like the demon spawn of the Misfits, Bauhaus and the Zombies. The Los Angeles duo, comprised of actor Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, release their self-titled debut album on October 6th, and Rolling Stone has your first listen to the ghoulishly infectious track “In the Room Where You Sleep” right here:

“In the Room Where You Sleep” could fit on either a psych-soaked Nuggets compilation or the soundtrack of a Vincent Price film. For a song that employs no electric guitars — in fact, no stringed instruments appear on the album at all — the track truly rocks. While the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music Children’s Choir feature prominently on the duo’s debut LP, and early versions of “In the Room Where You Sleep” included the choir, the final version finds Gosling and Shields painting the creepy picture themselves.

Dead Man’s Bones came together when Gosling and Shields met in Toronto while dating sisters in 2005. (Fun fact: actress Rachel McAdams and her sis Kayleen.) The pair shared a fascination with ghosts, so they began working on a monster love story for the stage. When that undertaking proved too great, they refocused what they had written and turned it into their debut album. Growing up in Canada, the Langley Schools Music Project — a choir featuring 60 untrained children singing songs of the era — served as a major inspiration for Gosling, and led him to recruit the Silver Lake Conservatory.

When Dead Man’s Bones embark on their first tour next month — the trek fittingly kicking off two weeks before Halloween — they will recreate the songs off their self-titled debut by employing a local choir from the cities they visit on their trek. To add to the old-time feel of the performance, each concert will feature a talent show in place of the traditional opening act.

The remix I did for the song that changed the way I perceived music, forever. I’ve always loved this track. The first time I heard the live version, with the “heaven is a place on earth ” sample breakdown/reversing/everything coming together thing, it blew my mind. Hope you enjoy my ode to it.

“I Am T-Pain” Auto-Tune and Recording App Comes to iPhone

T-Pain knows most people think two things when they hear his name: “I have top hats and there’s Auto-Tune,” he tells Rolling Stone. He opted to turn the second signature into a new iPhone application developed with Smule. The “I Am T-Pain” app costs $2.99 and lets users transform their own voice into Auto-Tuned vocals, record tracks and stream them to Facebook or MySpace and create their own songs, Jay-Z be damned: “I mean most of the greatest rappers are singing now,” he says. Click above to watch Soulja Boy, Keri Hilson and Akon getting their own first looks at the app (we’ve got a brief demo after the jump, too).

“The same thing I use in the studio, that’s gonna be on the phone,” T-Pain says of Dr. Andy Hildebrand’s studio technology, briefly exploring the complexities of Auto-Tune software: “I don’t know how, but Dr. Andy uses the same math and the same procedure they use for oil digging.” There’s more info on the app available at the iTunes store.
