I recorded my first band. ( Nessie James & The Unknowns) Was my first paid studio gig time. This is the 2nd mix of sorts. Still more to add. The vocals are James Mcgee dummy vocals. He is going to re sing it and add some lead fill. Basically fill the empty spots in more. I’m happy with my new home studio. I can record 8 inputs now on my M audio Delta. Nice for a PCI sound card runs Cubase great. Anyway just thought Id post my production. Enjoy if you will.

MeFi Music
This is a song I wrote in late August, for bingo’s Revolving Floor project. I started from the naked gimmick of trying to re-use the word “seconds” in the same structural spot but with different meanings (“seconds” was the theme of that issue of Revolving Floor), and the story of the song just grew around that, as I tried to think up a narrative that could involve the concepts of assistants-to-ritual-suicide and going-back-for-more and the ticking of the clock.

I like the recording a lot in general, though the big hit of the return of the full instrumentation after the drop in the third verse doesn’t feel as big as I’d like.

This is another early effort in tracking live drums, too—unfortunately, I’m still just doing it with room mics, so there’s not a hell of a lot I can do about the levels on various drum sounds aside from a bit of EQ tweaking. But for all that it’s really satisfying to be able to have drums in a recording, and I’ve been considering experimenting with some retrackings of old songs that I wrote with a “band sound” in mind but never had a rhythm section for.

Vocals are also kind of experimental here; I hung a second mic (actually my new Zoom H2 in monitoring mode) in a window a few feet off from the main mic when I was tracking vocals, and the mix between those two is intentionally lopsided in the stereo field. Not sure I’m in love with the chorusy result on this song in particular (though I do like the extra roominess it gives the vocals during the drop in the third verse), but it’s something I might play with a little more in the future.

Nothing says “Happy 50th birthday” to your first musical hero like completely destroying one of his best songs! This version of an Alfred Yankovic original includes the debut of Pheatherwäit’s “brand new” (read: found by the dumpster in the original box) Casio Concertmate 450, and features what I believe to simultaneously be the most awesome and the worst accordion solo, of all time–past, present, and future–at 10:55. Apart from that and the vocals, it was an all Casio party!

Sadly, the low bitrate required to fit the file size limit actually makes it sound better.

Instrumentation:

Timbill: Lead Vocals, Accordion
Tréteque: Casio AZ-1 Keytar w/ Alesis QSR (Organ), Additional Vocals, Belch
Pheatherwäit: Casio PT-80 (Rhythm and “Trumpet”), Casio Concertmate 450 (“Metal Guitar”), Additional Vocals

This is a song about protecting diplomats I ride my bike down 2nd avenue every day on my way to work. A few weeks ago, during the United Nations 64th General Assembly, there was a week where cops everywhere diverting traffic away from 1st avenue, closing down entire lanes on 2nd avenue, shuttling diplomats to and from the U.N., and generally making commuters insane. One morning on my way to work, the phrase “Protect Dem Diplomatz” popped into my head, and I knew it had to become a song.

I culled samples from about 20 different songs and just lined them up end to end, recorded some vocals and here is the finished product. I wish the refrain sounded a bit less like “Who Let the Dogs Out,” but it’s not bad for about six hours work, and it’s always nice to have an excuse to break out my vocoder. Oh, and since no one seems to understand the sample at the end except me, it’s Method Man saying, “he’ll be like ‘oh shit, that’s the jam!’”
